Sunflower kernels: Bizarre prices in China

DALIAN. The prices for bakery and confectionery kernels have seemingly gone totally mad in China.

 

In May to August 2017, the prices for bakery and confectionery kernels drifted incredibly far apart. The bakery prices rose by 400 USD/mt, whereas the prices for confectionery kernels declined by more than 200 USD/mt CFR Hamburg.

Contrary price developments

The surge in prices for bakery kernels may have come as a surprise considering that production in China increased to 2.8 M mt in 2017, whereas the crop sizes in 2016 only amounted to 2.51 M mt. There are, however, issues with the quality. Supplies of high quality raw seeds are simply too lo
