MANISA. The TMO wants to part with further stocks and has announced sultana prices valid until the end of June. These prices range...

... at TRY 11 per kg for type 9 and TRY 11.50 per kg for type 10 and are therefore higher than the last registered market prices. Last Thursday, about 120 metric tonnes of raw sultanas, type 10, were traded on the Izmir commodity exchange at a level of TRY 10 per kg. Yesterday, however, no sales were made and how the market will react to price increases by the TMO remains to be seen in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the volatile weather in Manisa is causing increasing concern among market players. Heavy rainfall and hailstorms may have affected the crop. Although no official production estimates have been released yet, traders' expectations are roughly on par with last year's levels.

Unexpected increase in exports

Since the start of the season 203,504 metric tonnes of sultanas and raisins have been shipped overseas. In total, this is significantly less than last year, although weekly exports recently rose by around 1,100 metric tonnes to 3,697 metric tonnes. Compared to last year, prices for Turkish sultanas have become much more attractive in recent weeks, which should also have favoured spot purchases. According to market players, a meeting of the Aegean Exporters Union with dried fruit exporters will be held this week to discuss common issues, including the future of the sultana market.
