MANISA. Precipitation in the cultivation areas of sultanas is supplying the grapevines with sufficient humidity this winter and temperatures have climbed again to clearly above freezing.

About 100.000 mt not yet registered
About two thirds of the 300,000 mt of Turkish sultanas produced have already been sold, thus an estimated 100,000 mt are still available in the market. Farmers are now asking for higher prices for sultanas and this week the weak Turkish Lira can no longer absorb the increase completely.

The risk of frost remains
Many suppliers have already made purchases to cover their contracts which is why market participants do not expect any significant price leaps. This year again the conditions for a good production of sultanas are given, barring the risk of frost in spring. In order to avoid speculation harvest results shall only be published by an official institution. Which institution it will be, however, has not yet been decided.
