Sultanas: Shock for Turkey

MANISA. Rumours are afloat in Turkey claiming that a great number of hazelnuts have not been registered, which have a great impact on supply, especially since last year’s production was exceptionally large.

 

Record supplies

By the end of June, production officially stood at 320,000 mt. An additional 30,000 mt have, however, not been registered. This means that production exceeds the hitherto estimated 300,000-330,000 mt by far. It is rather the case that supplies amount closer to 350,000 mt. Market players reckon with a carry-over supply of 40,000 mt. Even is this year’s production should turn out smaller than last year stocks will nevertheless amount to 315,000-340,000 mt.

Prices are likely to drop

The prices for prompt deliveries remain firm. Contracts for the new crop are, however, trading at increased rates. Traders reckon that the prices for sultanas will drop considerably in 2016/17. Farmers and exporters alike intend to increase their margins over the next few months. Turkish dried fruit exporters are aiming for an average price level of 1,350-1,450 USD/mt FOB Izmir in the new season. Due to the promising crop outlook and the possible carry-over stocks other market players, however, expect prices to drop at the beginning of the new season.
