MANISA. The vineyards will be inspected over the next few days. More exact production estimates should be available by the end of July.

By then it will also be known in how far the sunshine has create any damage. Although unofficial estimates continue to expect a production of 270,000-300,000 mt, the farmers’ association at the very most reckons with 240,000 mt.

Price advantage

Prompted by the high prices in Iran traders in Turkey have only temporarily increased their prices. They rather prefer to seize their price advantage. The prices for prompt deliveries may have increased, but exporters are already promising prices of 1,250 USD/mt FOB Izmir. Price for the new crop should also be considerably cheaper by the middle of August. It, however, remains to be seen in how far these prices are realistic once the official production estimates have been published. The new crop should be available by September.

More rigorous controls

According to local chambers of agriculture there will be more rigorous checks on the use of pesticides in 2018/19. Farmers in Turkey tend to use pesticides for organic fields to prevent lower outputs. Turkey is intending to reduce the use of chemical pesticides in the long run.
