FRANFURT. In just over a month the EU sugar quota will be a thing of the past. The producers and processors are already enjoying their newly found freedom as the limits on production and exports are soon about to fall.

Prices tumble

The sugar beet farmers have considerably increased acreage for 2017/18, especially in Belgium, France and Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. In addition, the summer rains have benefitted the development of the plants. Market players reckon with an EU sugar production of 18.8-20.1 M mt – the highest value in more than ten years and a year-on-year increase of about 14-22%. It is, therefore, small wonder that the prices have tumbled over the last few months.
