Sugarcane crushing will start soon in this season
Interestingly, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the apex body of this industry, has conducted a survey on its member mills across the country, in which it has come to light that large sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh will start crushing once a month. The industry estimates that there will be heavy production of sugarcane in the state for the second consecutive year in 2017-18. During the year 2016-17, sugar production was 8.2 million tones.
ISMA Director General Avinash Verma said, "Many sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have given us in writing that they will start crushing till mid-October this year. Generally, sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh do not start crushing in October, so the crushing in October is a new thing for Uttar Pradesh's sugar mills. According to the top 4 states mentioned above, they are estimated to produce 0.8 million tonnes of sugar jointly in October this year. All sugar mills, government and consumers, will get benefit in October. Starting soon crushing will help to reduce the supply of sugarcane to mills and Khandasari units, especially sugar mills of western Uttar Pradesh. In fact, due to non-availability of sugar mills, the farmers sell their sugar cane to the Kandhari Khandasi industry to fulfill their cash requirement. Starting early crushing will start the earnings of mills soon.
The second reason is that the government has taken several steps to control the rise in sugar prices. Due to reports of production declining this year, prices were up two months ago. ISMA estimates that the production of sugar in India this year will be 20.3 million tonnes, which was 25.1 million tonnes last year. After approving 0.5 million tonnes of sugar this year, the government set a stock limit on mills on Tuesday. The president of West Indian Sugar Mills Association (WISMA) Bibi Thombre said, "The production of sugar in Maharashtra in 2017-18 is estimated to be 7.0 million tonnes, which was 4.2 million tonnes last year and 8.4 million tonnes in 2015-16. The production of sugarcane is estimated to be lower in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
