FRANKFURT/BRÜSSEL. For the sugar giant Nordzucker, the 2018/19 financial year was marked by losses. Nevertheless, the Group has no doubts about the long-term prospects offered by the sugar market. Meanwhile, experts anticipate an increase in production during the 2019/20 sugar campaign despite smaller cultivation areas.

EU sugar production 2019/20
The forecasts in the European Commission's Short-Term-Outlook for the 2019/20 sugar campaign are optimistic. Although the sugar production fell significantly after the drought of 2018, prices are at a comparatively low level. This is intended to induce sugar beet growers to reduce the cultivation area to about 1.66 million ha in the 2019/20 season, a decline of about 60,000 ha or 4% compared to the previous year. As reported by S&P Global Platts, the area under sugar beet in France is to be reduced by 6.2% to 455,000 hectares.
