Sugar: Silos are full

FRANKFURT. The 20% increase in production and the abolishment of the sugar quotas have not only presented the sugar industry with new chances this season but also with new problems.

 

A mixed blessing

The additional supplies have enabled the big exportation nations such as France, Germany and Belgium and Poland to ship larger quantities at lower prices. Shipments noticeably increased in the fourth quarter of 2017. In the first quarter, however, the EU export market was a bit more subdued.

The EU sugar prices have declined to the lowest level ever seen. Market players even expect delivery prices to drop to as little as 340 EUR/kg DDP Germany. Since the silos are full it has become more attractive for many traders to sell bel
