Sugar: Russia steps up production

MOSCOW. As many as 21 sugar plants have been operating in Russia since July. Data issued by the Ministry of Agriculture suggests that production and exports are on the rise. Producers are highly satisfied with the current market developments.

Production continues at record speed

The Russian Sugar Producers Union recently stated that 21 plants continued producing sugar at the end of January. More than 49,000 tonnes of sugar beets have been processed since the start of MY 2019/2020, which is a sharp rise of 28% over last year. Sugar production ranges at 7.4 million tonnes, which is 1,539 million tonnes more than last year. Russia exported around 485,000 tonnes of sugar in January-November 2019, which is 126,000 tonnes more than in the same period in 2018. The main export destinations include Kazakhstan, Belarus and the Ukraine. Sugar prices ranged at RUB 20.74/kg in southern Russia at the end of January. Russia's food security and monitoring and forecasting system reports that industrial producers were selling sugar for RUB 20.54/kg on 3 February..
