BONN. Global sugar consumption has been in the rise over the last few years and will continue to do so. Contrary to this, sugar consumption in Germany is declining, as the Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) reports.

Cut back in eating habits

The global increase in population has boosted demand for sugar, especially in Asia. Higher per capita consumption has, in addition, accelerated this development. In Germany is, however, witnessing a marginal decline. According to a recent study published by the DLG e.V. as much as 59% of the consumers in Germany are trying to reduce the amount of sugar they eat. This has negatively impacted sugar consumption at home. Over the last 6 years annual demand has decreased by an average of 4.1%. Although this data exclusively mirrors at home consumption and not total consumption in Germany, it does reflect a general tendency towards a decline – at least concerning evidently sugared products.

The number of buyers may have remained stable over the last few years. They do, however, purchase less sugar. In 2012 the households purchased sugar 12 times on average, whereas this number dropped to 9 in 2017.
