Farmers unwilling to sell feed barley for anything below 0.127 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.

Yields are stronger so far

SOFIA. Although this year the general harvesting season for all crops was belated because of weather conditions -- barley was not an exception to the rule, -- barley’s harvest is at its end. However, in order to put words into perspective, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of June 2017, farmers harvested only 44% of available land for harvest, which this year stand at 130,068 ha.

If today’s harvest progress is compared to that of last season, farmers lagged by about 54%. The pace of harvest has been slow, but so far aggregate yield was estimated to stand at 4.9 mt/ha; yield from harvest 2016-17 stood at 4.3 mt/ha. Again, the recorded yields from the North regions lead among the rest.

Prices: bids vs. asks

The general feeling among farmers is not to sell the new crop below 0.127 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria although buyers demand feed barley for as low as 0.120 EUR/kg. Output of harvest 2017-18 is projected to be around 600,000 mt, the majority of which could go directly for domestic consumption. As a result, prices might remain subdued for quite a time. Barley for malt is sold at 0.138 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.
