Spice Market Information & News
Cumin Seeds:
The arrival of cumin in the mandis of Gujarat including Unjha has started increasing. Recently, due to the increase in arrivals and poor visibility of traders and exporters, the cumin has decreased slightly recently. There is no hope of a special increase in cumin in the coming time. After the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and after the rain, there is an increase in the number of cumin seeds in Gujarat's mandis, including the Unjha. As per the information there is about 6000 to 7000 bags arrival reported and which shows upward trend of arrival.
On the other hand, reports of the supply of Turkish and Syrian crop have been relatively fragile internationally. Generally, in these two countries approximately 35000 tonnes of cumin is produced. Initially, in both of these countries estimates of about 40000 tonnes of cumin seeds were produced, but after this there was also news that about one-third of their crop was damaged. The production of cumin was affected due to the Turkish and Syrian civil war in the last five-six years. For this reason, India has remained a dependent supplier of cumin for the last two-three years at international level. Here, the local wholesale grocery market has remained stable and little downward. On the other hand, in the international market, the cumin seed remains at the level of $3.53 per kg. Despite the relatively high prices in the domestic markets, 11900 mt. of cumin worth rupees US$306.75 million have been exported in the financial year 2016-17, which was 97,790 mt. in the previous financial year and generated US$239.24 million was. It is clear that this time the export of cumin increased by volume 22 % and 28% on the basis of revenue income. Not only this, the Spices Board had set a target of exporting 110000 mt. tonnes of cumin worth US$257.81 million for the financial year 2016-17. On the basis of quantity, its exports are 108% and in terms of quantity, it is 119 %. There is no hope of a significant increase in cumin in the next few days.
