Sesame seeds: upswing in demand due to Diwali

NEW DELHI/ABUJA. With Diwali approaching and hopes being high for winning bids in the South Korean tender demand for sesame seeds has risen in India. Buyers have to look for alternatives in parts of Africa.

Demand up in India

Prices have risen nominally in India. Demand is the main driver as suppliers are buying high-quality seeds in the hope of winning bids for South Korea's tender and buying usually rises in the run up to Diwali, which will be celebrated on 12-16 November. As supplies are largely exhausted in most producing countries in Africa, this is also driving up international demand for seeds from India.
