NEW DELHI. The publication of the current sesame tender from Korea has given a boost to the Indian market at the beginning of the week.

 The tender in detail

According to reports, the annual sesame consumption in Korea is 115,000 mt, of which between 37,500 and 40,000 mt are purchased via tenders. A few years ago, Indian sesame exporters were the most important suppliers, but meanwhile African suppliers represent a serious competitor.

For the current call for tenders, the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trader Corporation is looking for a total of 10,000 mt of sesame, 3,000 mt in premium and 7,000 mt in standard quality. Offers are being accepted until 4 April 2017, and the goods should be delivered, depending on the country of origin, before 2 June 2017 (India) or 3 July 2017 (Africa).

Prices on the rise

The hot weather in India is ideal for the development of the summer crop, however, rain is expected in the next few days. The crop should be available on the market by mid-May, but this also means that the tender delivery, if the contract is awarded to the Indian suppliers, will probably need to be concluded with goods from the winter crop. Because of the already scarce availability of high-quality goods, the prices for hulled sesame seeds are soaring. No offers for unhulled sesame are available at this time.
