NEW DELHI. Rumours of a new tender are causing excitement in India. This will prove an important test for the current price level.

Korea will test the market

The rumours concern a possible new tender from Korea. Should India succeed in selling sesame seeds the prices will increase. If India, however, fails the prices are set to drop. Traders are moreover concerned about the quality of the remaining stocks. The autumn rains had an adverse impact on the quality of the crop.

Price drops in India

Market participants are, in addition convinced that acreage will decrease in summer. Abundant supplies and the low prices are hardly rendering sesame seeds attractive for the farmers. The market is currently witnessing considerably price drops due to the low prices of sesame seeds imported from Africa and subdued demand in China. Therefore, prices have again dropped below last year’s high. It is impossible to predict in how far the current price level will last.
