Sesame seeds: searching for alternatives

NEW DELHI/ABUJA. Due to the smaller crop, Indian sesame seed traders will be buying larger quantities from overseas in the coming months. Nigeria's sesame seed crop will be available on the market from November.

High imports expected for India

In India, the results of the Kharif crop are likely to be significantly lower than last year. The main growing states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were able to achieve a combined production of 145,000-150,000 mt in 2023; this autumn's crop is estimated at 130,000-140,000 mt. Market players reckon that India will import an additional 70,000-80,000 mt of sesame seeds in the coming months to make up for the shortfall, with Brazil and Nigeria leading the list of sourcing countries.
