Sesame seeds: quality is an issue

NEW DELHI. Upcountry demand is on the rise for sesame seeds in India. Supplies are running low over quality issues. Suppliers, however, reckon that they will stand a chance when South Korea issues a new tender soon.

Decline in sowing drives up prices

As the Directorate for Oilseeds Development reported the kharif crop was sown on an area of around 414.500 ha, which is 17% down on last year. Market players also state that supplies in good quality are very much limited. Upcountry and overseas demand are firm and prices range higher. Hulled sesame seeds with an 99.95% purity are trading at USD 1,600/mt FOB India.
