Sesame seeds: Prices slump after 4-year high

NEW DELHI. There are less and less arrivals in the spot markets in India. Curiously, prices are under pressure, despite disappointing production figures.

 

13.5% cheaper in 4 weeks

At the current price level, sesame seeds from India are by no mean competitive in the international market. Encouraging production figures from Africa are putting the prices under pressure.

With the arrival of the crops from Africa, leading importing countries such as China have reduced imports from India. With an estimated 80,000-90,000 mt, China has stored a relatively small volume at the ports. Demand is now to be covered again by cheaper sesame seeds from Africa.
