Discoveries in Mesopotamia dating back more than 4,000 years have led scientists to assume that sesame seeds are one of the oldest oilseed crops on this planet. Sesame originates from India and parts of Africa. The seeds are used for various purposes. They are for instance processed into oil, roasted seeds are used to season food and they refine bakery products. Tahini (sesame paste) is also an important ingredient for halva (sesame paste mixed with honey and sugar). Sesame seed snack bars are, in addition, very popular.
