Sesame seeds: Ethiopia may lose competitive position

ADDIS ABABA. Sesame seed production has risen in Ethiopia. The USDA, however, also observes an enormous distortion in price in the recently issued annual oilseed report.

Production rises by 13%

The USDA estimates that production has climbed by 13% to 340,000 metric tonnes in MY 2019/2020. Favourable weather conditions and improved farming practices have boosted yields. Total supplies are estimated at 410,000 metric tonnes, domestic consumption at 60,000 metric tonnes and the ending stocks at 65,000 metric tonnes. Post has revised production estimates for 2018/2019 downwards to 300,000 metric tonnes as exports declined by 22%.
