NEW DELHI. Last year’s disappointing crop is posing a great challenge to India. The market has to be very creative to be able to meet overseas demand.

Supply worries
Supplies are very limited for the export market. The problem is that the heavy rains in autumn have severely impacted the main crop and the traders have to resort to the Kharif crop.

They are busy importing and hulling sesame seeds from Africa to prevent them from running out of stocks. This has so far enabled them to meet this week’s soaring demand from Europe and other countries.

Curious price development
Since last week the prices have increased by at least 40 USD/mt. The prices for hulled sesame seeds have risen by as much as 70 USD/mt. Considering the disappointing crop it is, however, rather surprising that they have only climbed 100 USD/mt above last year’s level.
