NEW DELHI. A small summer crop and reports about poor quality of the 2016 winter crop should actually cause prices to increase. However, the Indian sesame seed market is struggling with this.

Prices at a 10-year low

It is not unusual for prices to drop shortly before the summer crop. The sesame seed prices have now even reached a ten-year low. This year, the summer crop is expected to enter the market at the end of June, the delay is caused by later sowing.

After the last Korean tender, even though there was slight movement on the market, the expected price increase failed to appear. Instead, prices dropped further below the level of last week. Chinese buyers got their supplies from Africa and demonstrated little interest in Indian sesame seeds. The overall demand is also dropping.
