Sesame seeds: Contradicting crop estimates

NEW DELHI. The production estimates in India differ greatly. New crop arrivals from Gujarat and west Bengal are expected for mid-May.

Prices decline

According to official reports, sowing has risen by 18% to 19,000 in Gujarat. Foretell reckons that the heavy rains and hailstorms in the second half of April have done little damage to the plants.

Contrary to this, other market players state that acreage has declined this year. In fact, it cannot be ruled out that sowing has declined in the drier regions, whereas in areas with good irrigation systems acreage is said to have increased.
