Sesame seeds: Attractive prices promote production

NEW DELHI. Sesame seeds have been trading on levels not seen since 2015 over the last ten months and the attractive prices have now prompted an upsurge in production in India.

More sesame seeds in Gujarat

Traditionally, the farmers in Gujarat mainly grow sesame seeds for the kharif crop. The high prices of the recent months have prompted an increase in sowing, which is currently estimated at 76,016 hectares. Last year, sowing was completed on 72,610 hectares. Lack of rain, in addition, caused a reduction in yields. Market players report that last year's production ranged at 50,000 to 60,000 metric tonnes in Gujarat, while this year's production is estimated at 70,000 to 90,000 metric tonnes.
