NEW DELHI. The Indian sesame market has come to a standstill, hardly any sesame seeds are still available in the free market. Most of the goods are at dealers and exporters who have to fulfil their long-term obligations.

More imports, less exports
Experts estimate that the sesame seed harvest in autumn 2018 was only able to achieve half the usual result due to unfavourable weather conditions. To partially compensate for the crop shortfall, sesame seed imports to India could double in 2019.

At the same time, export volumes are expected to fall by 10-15% this year. If possible, buyers have shifted their requests to Africa. However, the good export demand is now causing prices here to rise as well.
