Saffron: not all news is bad news

TEHRAN. Smuggling and trade barriers dominate headlines concerning saffron in Iran. Yet not all news is bad news. Expectations are rather upbeat for this year’s crop.

Smuggling jeopardises Iran’s leading position

All media reports issued about saffron in Iran highlight the damage illegal smuggling activities are creating. Most recently the Ministry of Agriculture stated that exports dropped by 37% to 42 mt between 20 March and 21 July (the first four months of the Persian year) as compared with the same period last year. Official customs statistics also show that exports slumped by 53% in value between 20 March and 21 August.
