Saffron: high risk of farmers giving up

MASHHAD. Harvesting saffron is a significant cultural event in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province and the neighbouring districts. Local farms, however, report that the crop has declined by approximately 50% this year mainly due to drought conditions.

Continuous declines

According to Razavi Khorasan’s Agricultural Organisation production has witnessed the third year of decline in a row. While the crop size ranges at 300-320 mt in a normal year, the organisation expects this year’s crop to be limited to 200 mt or less due to the impact of drought throughout the summer and extreme cold during the previous winter.
