SOFIA. While the country does not have sufficient quantities left to export, imports will rise to meet local demand, as small as it is annually.

BULGARIA. Although the country is a relatively small producer of rapeseed annually, compared to the other producers of the oilseed within the Black sea region, it exports the greater majority of the crop. Indeed, the greatest share of shipped volumes abroad takes place in the few months after harvest has been completed, leaving exports to level off later during the marketing season – almost nonexistent at this time of year.

Rapeseed: a dichotomy has prevailed

Disregarding the strong pulse of the foreign market while seemingly adapting to a predicted drop in the demand for rapeseed for the production of biodiesel within the EU processing sector in the medium-term and a possible increase in the output of rapeseed in the countries within the region, local farmers decided to cut down on planted acreages for next season. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the most recently released data indicates that for the upcoming harvesting season, farmers will stand before fields of 172,659 ha or 7% lower from those sowed for the previous year. Yet, they have a Winter to go through first, before hoping to enter rich fields, since the season may turn out quite disquieting, if not for all regions in the country, at least for those where precipitation has been low. After all, March may turn out snowless, with low temperatures, resulting in winterkill.

There seems to be a gap of perception about what foreign markets would take and how to respond to such a demand in the short-term, although regional developments have exerted strong influence during the current marketing season; a case in point, the bumper realized output by Ukraine this season. Anyhow, local production satisfies domestic consumption as well, which although relatively small on a yearly basis, has turned to imports since the majority of the locally collected crop has long been exported.
