Rapeseed: With so many ways to fail

BULGARIA. The most recent memo of the Ministry of Agriculture shows up-to-date estimates of availability of sowed acreages of rapeseed standing at 185,332 mt or by 8.7% higher on a yearly basis. However, before the beginning of harvest there is still plenty of time, and if hailstorms hit, as they did before and during harvests of rapeseed last year - although limited to a few places, some farmers might fill buckets of tears as a few did during last year. Local farmers are hopeful the weather will be favorable from now on till all crops have been collected from the fields.

The majority of rapeseed is usually harvested throughout the Southeast region, followed by the central North, Northeast and Northwest, as both Southwest and central South regions produce the smallest quantities of the oil seed, annually. Recent inspections show that in the majority of fields, there has been plenty of moisture – even too much in some, which will be damaging to crops. Although moisture is necessary and thus favorable for the development of rapeseed now, it serves the same purpose for weeds, as well. Some farmers observed that in places weeds have sprouted to become taller than the actual crops. In addition, within some fields have been noticed insects such as rapeseed stem flee and meligethes aenues that inflict damages to the bud and/or other parts of the crop.

At the dusk of market activities

The majority of rapeseed has been long exported, with the highest share going to the EU market. At that time of year, farmers are busily engaged in fieldwork while intermediary market players hope for a strong upcoming harvest. It is the weather factor now that makes farmer anxious about the short-term.
