SOFIA. The successful export season has already ended. Could it have been stronger?

BULGARIA. The forecasted showers during the following days are expected to fill in fields’ soil with the necessary moisture reserves within regions of the country. Rains have already fallen within the Southeast – the region from which farmers collect the highest output of rapeseed on an annual basis. Short-lived hailstorms already fell within the Southwest.

Rapeseed: The less one has, the less one exports

The most recently released data, by local authorities, on collected harvest 2017-18 places aggregate output at 478,987 mt, which on an annual basis is by close to 6% less. Even though the marketing year has not reached its end yet, the export season for locally grown rapeseed has already ended. Usually, intermediary market players export the majority of the crop within the few months after harvest. After all, the country is a relatively small producer, and consequently an exporter, in comparison with other rivals within the Black sea region.

By the end of last week, total exports reached 428,461 mt, which on a yearly basis is trailing behind by 12.70%. Yearly, the majority of exports go to the markets of the EU, as far less shipments are sent to non-EU markets (see table above). Since foreign demand for locally grown rapeseed has always been so strong from early in the marketing season, it is only natural for farmers to increase planted acreages. Yet, subsequent sowing campaigns seem never to cover plots of land that substantially increase planted acreages on a yearly basis, which will lead to higher output and consequently stronger exports. Before the beginning of harvest 2018-19, farmers are expected to enter fields of between 5% and 10% more sowed rapeseed land, provided weather conditions favor the development of the crop in the following two months.
