Raisins: farmers scramble for water

KASHMAR. Meteorologists report that Kashmar, a production hotspot for green raisins in Iran, is currently hit by the worst drought in 50 years. Although droughts frequently occur in the county, which is in the Khorasan Razavi Province, this year’s extreme conditions have reached a new dimension. Production will certainly decline sharply and farmers are left to suffer.

Extreme heat, no rain and power cuts

The situation is intensified by the fact that the country has received virtually no rain in two months. Power outages coupled with extreme heat witnessed in recent days have disrupted irrigation circuits and caused horticultural crops such as grapes to suffer from water stress. The situation is so bad that many grapes have fallen from the vines. Yields are expected to decline by 30-40%.
