Raisins: dangerous use of pesticides

TEHRAN. Although the Qazvin province is the largest producing raisin province in Iran, exports range below 10,000 metric tonnes. The region has considerable difficulties concerning quality issues and lack of professional organisation and monitoring. Farmers even put the health of entire communities at risk.

Toxic raisins put off buyers

The Qazvin province accounts for 35% of Iran’s total raisin production. Of the estimated 230,000 metric tonnes of raisin produced in the country this year as much as 80,000 metric tonnes stem from Qazvin. The province, however, exports less than 10,000 metric tonnes overseas. Although the province would in theory be able to produce as much as 250,000 metric tonnes every year if the vineyards were modernised, the lack of professional organisation is an enormous setback in the area.
