DALIAN. Commodity prices have climbed noticeably in both the GWS and shine skin markets, which is also having an impact on export prices. In addition to rising demand, the buying behaviour of suppliers also plays an important role.

Suppliers' wrong decisions

Farmgate prices have risen sharply in both the shine skin and GWS markets compared to last week, which is also reflected in export prices. Prior to the Chinese New Year, suppliers had assumed that commodity prices would fall after the celebrations and had put their purchases on hold for the time being. Now that they have to stock up on new goods, this turns out to be a mistake, as few of them have price hedges in the form of signed contracts and will have to accept the high prices.
