Pumpkin seeds: farmgate prices continue to decrease

DALIAN. Commodity prices for shine skins have now reached such a low level that suppliers are recording losses in some cases. Meanwhile, speculators are pursuing a plan that could easily backfire.

Speculators could miscalculate

There is currently a lot of movement in shine skin prices. Average farmgate prices have dropped to CNY 16.8/kg, while the largest speculator, who still has up to 50,000 mt in his warehouses, is asking CNY 17.8/kg. However, Chinese traders report that the production price is around CNY 19/kg, so suppliers are already making losses. Speculators would prefer to wait until the smaller traders have sold out and then demand higher prices, but this plan is unlikely to work out.
