DALIAN. The exceptionally high demand for GWS caused supplies to shrink rapidly over the last few weeks – resulting in a drastic increase in prices.

Meanwhile, several suppliers can no longer offer GWS seeds from the old crop. In contrast, the prices for Shine Skin, Grade A pumpkin seeds are relatively stable at a level of 2,450-2,650 USD/mt CFR Hamburg.

Price increase should persist

Buyers are demonstrating strong purchase interest for the new crop and market players are expecting increased trade activity starting in October. At the moment, prices are not expected to drop again before the end of the year. However, many Chinese exporters are still holding back with offers for the 2017 crop.

Until the crop is completely harvested, market predictions are like gazing in a crystal ball. Because of the considerably lower acreages compared to last year, the overall production will be smaller. Thanks to the favourable weather conditions in the last few months, however, market players are expecting higher yields per hectare. According to current reports, the production volume of Shine Skin pumpkin seeds should be around 120,000-150,000 mt. GWS seeds should reach 10,000-15,000 mt this year.
