Pumpkin seed kernels: Plummeting prices force suppliers to fight for survival

DALIAN. Market participants cannot believe how low prices have dropped in China. The price development of the last few months is simply incredible.

Prices have dropped to a 10-year low

After the prices reached record highs in 2014/15 they have now plummeted to a 10-year low. Last year’s large crop and the enormous carry-over stocks can hardly be sold in a market in which oversea demand is low. Over the last two years, prices have dropped by more than 65% for Shine Skin and GWS. They were still as high as 5,800 USD/mt CFR Hamburg in February 2015.

 A change in direction is possible

A change may occur in the next few weeks when sowing starts. The low prices should prompt many farmers to cultivate other commodities. Market participants reckon that the prices are set to increase over the summer.
