FRESNO/TEHRAN. US exports have surged by 45% for pistachios. Exports are also up in Iran. Yet, the harvest is delayed.

US shipments exceed 1 billion pounds

Monthly domestic shipments were lagging behind in July, but exports were up. Domestic shipments thereby declined by 4% to 18.4 million pounds in July as compared with the same month last year, whereas exports were 22% up at 48.7 million pounds. Total monthly shipments stood 13% higher at 67.1 million pounds. Domestic shipments have, however, performed not quite as bad throughout the season. They ranged 2% higher in September 2023 to July 2024 than in the same period in 2023/2024.

Exports even surged by 45% to 882 million pounds thereby prompting total shipments to range 13% higher at 1.1 billion pounds. China retained its position as most important export destination. Shipment nearly doubled. Germany also witnessed an upsurge in shipments of 81%, which propelled the country into second position. Shipments to Turkey, however, declined by 7%, whereas exports to Spain rose sharply by 70%.

Delayed harvest in Iran

At 94,934 mt (209 million lbs) Iran’s pistachio shipments also ranged much higher than in the past two years for September 2023 to June 2024 as the national Pistachio Association (IPA) highlights. China is also the most important export market as Iran shipped 15,183 mt (33 million lbs) of pistachios to the country in the first ten months of the season. Russia is, however, next in line (8,709 mt/19 million lbs), followed by Turkey (7,499 mt/16 million lbs) and the United Arab Emirates (6,509 mt/14 million pounds).

AS IPA further states, blooming occurred later in spring and the summer is hotter than usual. This has delayed harvesting by up to ten days. Prices have certainly started to rise, although they still range much lower than in recent years.
