Pecans: EU imports up

BRUSSELS. EU imports have risen for pecans this year. Drought is a serious issue in the US and crop estimates have been revised in South Africa.

18% rise in EU imports

At 11,777 mt worth EUR 109 million (USD 121 million) EU imports are up 18% in volume and 12% in value this year so far on the 10,004 mt worth EUR 98 million (USD 108 million) imported between January and August 2023. The USA and Mexico have remained the most important supplying countries by far. Imports from the US have risen by 10%. Local media reports indicate that it is still difficult for growers to provide accurate production figures for this year’s crop. In Georgia, many new trees many new trees may have been planted over the years but hurricanes have also impacted production. Texas is battling two years of severe drought.

While EU imports from Mexico have risen sharply by 52%, the shipments from South Africa have slumped by 72%. The South African Pecan Nut Producers Association (SAPPA) revised the crop estimates downwards in August. SAPPA now estimates the total crop at 27,800-29,200 mt and expects the amount of exportable nuts to range at 25,000-26,300 mt. The Netherlands are the leading importing EU member state and account for 42% (4,890 mt) of the bloc’s total imports this year so far. Next in line are Germany with 31% (3,640 mt) and Spain with 9% (1,020 mt).
