Panasonic annually grows 80 tons of vegetables and leafy vegetables

Even for the first year, they managed to grow up 3.6 tons of products, and now this figure reaches 80 tons of vegetables per a year.
The plants are grown in a specially designed multi-level building with stable climate control and LED lighting with a spectrum close to natural sunlight. The company is confident that agriculture in enclosed spaces is the key to the future and is able to solve the problem of food supplies throughout the world.
At first, the farm of 250 m2 allowed to grow about 3.5 tons of vegetables a year. However, later, according to the management of the agricultural division of the company, the farm increased production more than 4-times.
Multi-storey greenhouses allow growing plants in the soil at several levels using LEDs of their own light, thus ensuring a good harvest regardless of external conditions. Now the farm grows 40 varieties of different crops - from Japanese cabbage Mizun and salad to red mini radish and leaf beet. In the current year, Panasonic intends to start growing 30 more varieties in addition. While the share of products grown on such a farm is 0.015% of the total number of vegetables and leafy vegetables that are sold in Singapore today, but the company is determined to increase this figure to 5% in the near future.
At the moment, the production of the farm is sold under the trademark Veggie Life (Vegetarian Life), and the price for 100 g of greenery in supermarkets is about $ 5. In addition to shops, since the end of last year, the harvest of the farm is also delivered to local restaurants.
Panasonic built this farm in order to increase the number of grown foods in Singapore, because now the country imports more than 90% of food, and the use of artificial plantations and new technologies will help the Island state become less dependent on food import.
