SOFIA/WASHINGTON D.C. In Bulgaria, organic sunflower seed production has more than tripled since 2013 and consumer demand for organic products most certainly is on the rise. The country recorded record sales of EUR 28 million for organic food and beverages in 2017/18 and the prospects for 2019/20 are very much encouraging. Problem, however, is that organic production has suffered considerable setbacks over the last few years.

Stricter controls required

In the latest Organic Annual Report on Bulgaria the USDA highlights the difficulties for obtaining reliable data an information on organic production and trade. Despite the rise in demand for organic products driven by economic growth, organic production has struggled with malpractices concerning certification and subsidies, which led to a decline in total acreage by 3.2% in 2017. The government responded in autumn last year by introducing more stringent controls for the organic sector.
