Organic sugar: Learning from mistakes

FRANKFURT. With demand outstripping supply for organic sugar in Germany Nordzucker is planning to attract more organic farmers. The first year was marked by considerable setbacks.

 

The first year proved a disaster

This year, however, proved an enormous setback for the sugar producer. Due to the cold and wet weather many farmers, who first cultivated organic sugar beets, could not attend to the fields in time in Spring to prevent the spreading of weeds. Many, in addition, also lacked the manpower to sufficiently maintain their beets and some divisions simply had to be given up. In Nordzucker’s factory in Schladen 7,600 mt of organic beets were processed this year. The yields varied greatly between 20 mt/ha and 80 mt/ha and
