OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Canadian traders are highly concerned over the proposed US tariffs. For buyers in the EU mustard seeds from Canada are, however, becoming more attractive.

Projections remain devastating

The prospects of US tariffs are heavily weighing on market sentiments in Canada. Especially since the USA would have been an important customer for mustard seeds in 2025/2026 as acreage has declined here. According to Rayglen Commodities mustard seed prices will rise and farmers, who still have enough space, are advised to consider sowing mustard seeds. Another aspect to consider is that Canada is a good alternative for buyers in the EU.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has mainly retained estimates in the current report. Acreage is still expected to drop by 27% and production will range an estimated  32% lower than last year at 130,000 mt. Relevant change, however, is that projections for domestic consumption have been revised downwards for next year. This should boost carry-over supplies, which may partly compensate for lower yields.

Ukraine beats Russia in European import statistics

The EU has imported 49,705 mt of mustard seeds worth EUR 37.699 million (USD 39.172 million) in the current marekting year, which started on 1 July. This is 18% down in terms of volume and even 32% down in terms of value on last year. As higher import tariffs persist for shipments from Russia since July, imports from here have slumped by 76%. In direct oppositions ot this, shipments from Ukraine have not only surged by 76% but the country has now also become the most important supplier for the bloc. Yet, Ukraine holds less market shares than Russia last year as the volumes shipped from Canada follow close on heel. Kazakhstan and Moldova have also witnessed impressive triple digit rises in shipments to the EU.

In addition, the EU's leading importers have reduced intake this year so far. At 16,130 mt Germany has, in fact, cut imports by 26%. Poland has even imported 37% less, only 12,580 mt, and  Belgium 27% less with imports only amounting to 7,380 mt. Ukrainian Sinapis Alba mustard seeds, 99.95%, are trading at EUR 770/mt DDP Germany.
