Canada worries about export markets
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is currently holding back on corrections for the 2022/2023 mustard seed season, with no adjustments made in the current report. Acreage is expected to have almost doubled from last year to 217,000 ha and yields are also expected to be much higher again after the disastrous 2021 result, resulting in a 250% increase in production to 175,000 mt. Prices are also expected to average just CAD 2,050/mt, almost 30% less than 2021/2022, according to current estimates.
As the experts at Rayglen Commodities report, the dry weather is ensuring that harvests are progressing quickly and US farmers are also said to be making good progress, while at the same time acreage here is at a record level. The latter is fuelling concerns among Canadian traders that they will not be able to serve one of their most important export markets in the usual way. However, the yields reported so far are extremely mixed in both Canada and the USA.
