NUR-SULTAN. Experts believe that mustard seed production in Kazakhstan could increase this year despite smaller acreages.

Smaller area, higher yields

Kazakh mustard seed production has been subject to considerable fluctuations in recent years. In addition to volatile yields per hectare and areas under cultivation, differences can arise because not all experts share the same opinion. Compared to the official agricultural authorities, the experts at Grain&Oilseeds Kazakhstan schedule significantly smaller areas of land for the annual crop. However, there seems to be a relative consensus on the forecasts for the 2020/2021 season, with figures ranging from 40,000 to 43,000 ha. Based on the average yield of the past five years, Kazakhstan's mustard seed production could increase to 18,800 mt this year, while Grain&Oilseeds Kazakhstan estimates a yield of 16,000 mt for the 2019/2020 season. In addition, about 5,200 mt are expected to remain from the old crop, so that the total availability of Kazakh mustard seeds in 2020/2021 could increase to 25,000 mt.
