Heavy rains have been forecasted over the next few days, which may have an adverse impact on the crops. This could lead to price hikes sooner or later. In addition, the Indian government is planning to increase the import duty on wheat in April to limit imports from countries such as Australia, France and the Ukraine and protect the domestic market. India has so far imported 2.4 m mt and another 1.2 m mt are to follow in the next few months.
Cumin
Increased demand from China has caused prices to rise. In addition, sowing acreage has decreased in Gujarat, where as little as 278,700 ha have been sown. Last year acreage amounted to 292,400 ha. Cumin Grade A 99% is currently being sold for 2,820 USD/mt FOB.
Coriander
The market witnessed mixed tendencies this week. While demand is limited to stable, supplies have increased since last year. Due to concerns over cold temperatures in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh prices, however, rose to as much as 1,125 USD/mt FOB this week.
Turmeric
Good upcountry demand and buying interest among the stockists is keeping the market volatile. New arrivals have, however, pressurised the market which is why offers are available for 1,305 USD/mt FOB.
Chili
Favourable weather conditions benefiting the progress of the harvest and the new dried chili crop should mainly become available between Mid-February and Mid-April. While chili S4 stemless rose by 100 USD/mt to 1,630 USD/mt FOB. The prices for Teja chili remained on a stable level due to low carry-over stocks and an increase in demand from Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and China.
Cardamom
Since the long dry spell had a considerable impact on the development of the plants arrivals are likey to continue to fall. The high prices for cardamom are, however, deterring buyers, which is why temporary decreases in price may be expected. Cardamom is currently offered for 20,950 USD/mt FOB.
