There are 6,746 of these markets distributed across India, always separated by a distance of about 462 km. During the course of the liberalisation of the Indian agricultural market, non-governmental companies should also be given the opportunity to establish wholesale markets where the farmers can sell their produce.
Cumin seed
Decreasing demand due to the relatively high price level is putting more pressure on cumin seed prices; moreover, the market is constantly being supplied with deliveries from the growing regions. But market players hope for growing purchase interest in the near future, which could slow down the drop in prices. This week, the offers lie at 2,731 EUR/mt FOB.
Coriander
Not only domestic buyers are being cautious lately with coriander purchases. Compared to coriander from other countries of origin, the prices are much higher. Due to the strong competition and the lack of purchase interest, the prices are slowly decreasing. At the same time, only very few farmers are willing to reduce their commodity prices and to hold onto their stocks. Indian coriander currently lies at a level of 976 EUR/mt FOB.
Turmeric
Turmeric prices continue to plummet. Traders now fear that the farmers could reduce their acreage if the prices continue to drop. On the other hand, the low price level could stimulate demand, which would at least stabilise the prices. The price for turmeric currently lies at 967 EUR/mt FOB.
Cardamom
At the beginning of the week, the cardamom prices rose to 22,930 EUR/mt FOB, but were then stable at this level for the rest of the week. Market players assume that the prices will remain at this level for now.
Black pepper
The rumours that large quantities of Vietnamese pepper have entered the Indian market continue to make prices drop. The pressure to sell is high, but the buyers are still waiting before they take action. Black pepper from India is currently being offered at 8,935 EUR/mt FOB.
