BONN. According to the latest figures released by the Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI), the prolonged summer has is a blessing for ice cream producers. Nevertheless, the industry is now …

… focusing on the winter. They are very well aware of the importance of the winter months.

Decisive winter months

The producers in Germany are trying to drive up sales with innovative winter creations, which include hazelnuts, almonds, caramel or cinnamon. According to the BDSI one in five ice creams, ca. 100 million liters are consumed in autumn and winter.

Record consumption is possible

This year prolonged hot and dry summer has encouraged consumption greatly. Ice cream sales have risen by 15% to more than 400 million liters in the supermarkets and in the drug stores between January and August (2017: 360 million liters). In addition, around 50 million liters have been sold in outdoor venues such as theme parks, swimming pools and cafés and beer gardens.

The BDSI is confident that per capita consumption will easily match the record consumption in 2003 of 8.7 liters. Last year, consumption ranked at 7.9 liters.
