Prices Drop As Health Fears Hit Demand

After decades of stable demand growth, the world is heading for a tipping point as consumers turn against the cola and candy blamed for an obesity epidemic in the rich world. At the same time, sugar has to compete with cheap syrups increasingly used in processed food.

With consumers moving away from sugar and sugar products, companies have tried to decrease sugar in their goods. One such example can be taken of Nestle, they have found a way to reduce sugar in chocolates as much as 40% and lower it by 10% in UK and Ireland. And Coco Coal isn't far the line it is also planning to reduce sugar by 2025.

Some countries such as France, Mexico and few cities of US have added 'Sin Taxes' which was previously on tobacco or alcohol and now is on sugary soda as well. The World Health Organization says its research shows that a 20 percent increase in the retail price of fizzy drinks results in a proportional drop in demand.

The consumption of sugar isn't going to just fall from the cliff specially in the developing countries.  But in richer/developing countries the trend in demand is set to decline. With the fall in demand the sugar industry is also facing a huge loss.
