ORDU. The prospects for the new crop could hardly be better. Market players are, however, also calling for caution.

Farmgate bickering

Exports of Turkish hazelnuts are still going relatively well and are rapidly approaching the 200,000-ton mark. But the market is already focussing on the new season, causing the farmgate prices to drop to 8.50-9.50 TRY/kg last week. Because of the stronger Turkish lira, however, export prices for European buyers are maintaining the same level as last week. Whether the farmers will still be able to achieve their asking price of 12 TRY/kg in this season remains uncertain. The long-term goal for the producers is even a price of 15 TRY/kg, but according to current information, the TMO is also "only" offering 12.50 TRY/kg the new crop.

Farmers must intervene

The census performed last week supports the promising estimates. Market players are, however, reporting an increased risk of mildew if the farmers do not control the fungus in due time. Rumours are circulating on the Turkish hazelnut market that farmers are denying the actually rather positive outlooks to prevent the prices from dropping further.
